1966 World Cup Final
The 1966 World Cup Final does not appear in the July ratings as one might expect. An estimated 30 million people watched this transmission in the UK alone with the BBC claiming an audience of 26 million. However, the research organisation at this time, TAM (Television Audience Measurement) claimed that the programme only reached number 13 in their chart because they only metered homes with a choice of channels, which means that in places where ITV was still not available, viewing households were not taken into consideration. It wasn't until August 1977 that figures were counted in actual viewer numbers rather than households and it wasn't until 1980 that disputes of this nature became a thing of the past.

TOP TEN TV SHOWS MONTH BY MONTH - 1955 to 1959

Here's a list of the top ten Britsh TV shows on a month-by-month basis from 1960 to 1969
Notes: From 1955 to 1956 the Top Ten was created by evaluating the London percentage audience share - From 1957 onwards the top ten was based on how many homes were actually viewing the listed programmes. From August 1977 the figure shown was for individual viewers.
